“In States Unborn and Accents Yet Unknown”: Spectral Shakespeare in Paolo and Vittorio Taviani’s Cesare deve morire (Caesar Must Die).

The paper focuses on Paolo and Vittorio Taviani’s Cesare deve morire (Caesar Must Die) (2012), an Italian adaptation of Julius Caesar set in a high security prison in Rome with a cast entirely made of convicts or former convicts. It explores how this adaptation "deconstructs" and "rewrites" Shakespeare (from an "Interview" with the film directors), especially by setting Julius Caesar in the "unborn state" of a prison, and through the use of a number of "accents yet unknown"–the inclusion of "dialects" from the South of Italy that not only displace the English "original" but also "standard" Italian translations of the play. This article deals with Titus? visit to the temple of Venus at Paphos in the second book of Tacitus? Historiae. I argue that apart from its other literary intentions already mentioned by scholars, this digression implicitly connects Titus not only with Aeneas but also with Julius Caesar. Titus? affair with Berenice that recalls Caesar?s affair with Cleopatra, Tacitus? allusions to Lucan?s De Bello Civili where Caesar?s visit to the tomb of Alexander the Great is described, the ?????Motiv and fortuna?s favour that characterise both Roman generals, all contribute to connect Titus with Caesar and allow the reader to view a parallel between the Flavian and the Julio-Claudian dynasty. Caesarin Gallian sota -teos toi aikalaistensa tietoisuuteen sen ajan mittapuun mukaan valtavan maa-alueen asukkaineen ja maantieteellisine nimistöineen, mikä tekeekin siitä erinomaisen lähteen nimistön tutkimukseen. Tutkimuksessani kartoitan Gallian sota -teoksessa esiintyvät Gallia Transalpinan heimonimet, paikkakunnan nimet, vesistöjen nimet ja muut maantieteelliset nimet, sekä tutkin näiden nimien säilyvyyttä nykynimistössä ja tekstikriittisesti epävarmojen nimien esiintyvyyttä. Caesar mainitsee Gallia Transalpinan alueelta 94 heimoa, 32 paikkakuntaa, 13 vesistöä ja kuusi muuta maantieteellistä nimeä. Es posible que para algunos filósofos irracionalistas y profesionalmente antiacadémicos una sistematización de la filosofía no pase de ser algo con que llenar el cesto de los papeles, pero cuando se piensa que la filosofía trata de resol- ver racionalmente cuestiones sobre el conocimiento, la reali- dad, la ciencia... el intento de ofrecer una sistematización de estas cuestiones y sus soluciones coherentes es valioso aunque sólo sea porque nos permite una reflexión sobre el camino recorrido.
